September has drawn to a close, and the cottage now seems to have settled into autumn. It began with dahlias still flowering on the patio, a few warm afternoons and the last traces of summer lingering in the air. By the end of the month, the evenings were drawing in noticeably earlier, the lamps were being switched on before supper, and I was reaching for a pashmina before stepping outside. Nothing changed all at once. Autumn simply made itself known in a hundred small ways. Looking back, September feels less like the beginning of a new season and more like the month autumn truly arrived. Last autumn, I had returned to England after more than three decades in the United States, but I had not yet found this cottage. I was home, yet so much of my life still felt temporary. I was trying to work out where I would live, what I needed and what starting again was going to look like in practice. This year feels very different. Somewhere over the past few months, the cottage has stopped feeling new to me. I know which floorboard creaks, how the light moves through the rooms, and where Leila will settle while I work. I reach for the same mug without thinking, and the dining table has become both my workspace and the place where much of The Measured Life is made. The routines that once had to be deliberately created now carry me through the week almost without asking. I have been thinking about how quietly that happens. When we begin again, we tend to notice the obvious milestones: the move completed, the room finished, the job secured or the difficult decision finally made. Those moments matter, but they are only the outline. A life begins to feel like our own through repetition—using the same key in the same door, learning the rhythms of a place, recognising the sounds around us, and reaching the end of an ordinary day without feeling as though we are still waiting for everything to begin. There is rarely a single moment when the unfamiliar becomes familiar. One day, we simply notice that something which once required thought now feels natural. September also brought a milestone I could never have imagined when I uploaded my first video in late February: The Measured Life passed one million views on YouTube. It is an extraordinary number to see beside something that began in a tiny, empty cottage. More than anything, it represents individual people choosing to watch, return, leave a thoughtful comment, share a little of their own story, or quietly follow along from somewhere else in the world. Thank you. Your kindness and support have allowed this little corner of the internet to grow into something far more meaningful than I expected, and I never take that for granted. Perhaps that milestone is another reminder that progress is not always easy to see while we are living through it. Week by week, a video is filmed, edited and shared. Day by day, a home is tended and a new life takes shape. Then, every so often, we pause long enough to see how far we have travelled. Feeling settled does not mean that everything is finished, of course. Nor does it mean standing still. Soon, I will be leaving the cottage for a little while and travelling. I am looking forward to getting away, visiting places I have not been before and stepping outside my usual routines. I may share a little of it when I return, but I have not decided yet. For now, I am looking forward to simply experiencing it. I am also looking forward to the feeling of coming home again after time away. Sometimes we see a place most clearly after we have stepped away from it. We notice what we miss, what matters to us more than we expected, and what fresh ideas follow us home. I suspect I will return with a renewed affection for this tiny cottage, my familiar routines and the English countryside just beyond the door—and almost certainly far too many photographs. With October upon us, I found myself wanting to pause and acknowledge how much can change without fanfare. Perhaps there is something in your own life that deserves the same recognition: something that feels easier than it did a year ago; a decision you no longer question; a room, routine or relationship that now feels dependable; or simply the sense that you are no longer standing where you once were. We can become so accustomed to looking ahead that we overlook what has already changed. September, with its shifting light and gradual movement from one season into another, offered a timely reminder to pause long enough to notice. Wherever you are reading this, I hope there is something steady beneath your feet, something new to look forward to, and at least one sign that you are further along than you once thought.
